Oceans Rise

Independent researches have shown that since the 1950s, ocean temperatures have risen substantially, and this has caused a great rise in global sea levels. In recent years, it is estimated that ocean levels rise by one inch per decade, when before they had risen by only six-tenths of an inch per decade.

Calcium Carbonate Shells

For people in coastal areas, the rising sea levels pose a greatly increased chance of coastal flooding. Meanwhile, for many sea creatures, the rise in ocean temperatures causes increased ocean acidity. In turn, this affects mineral balance in the water which makes it more difficult for sea creatures such as shellfish and corals to make protective skeletons or shells. Altogether, this will affect many ecosystems’ health and impact the roughly one million species that depend on corals.
